Easily Share Flickr Pictures on Twitter

You've Got Questions

  1. What is SnapTweet?

SnapTweet is an easy to use service which makes it simple to post your latest Flickr photos to your Twitter stream. There are a few options you can choose from: send my latest photo, send tagged photos only, and send all emailed photos.

  2. Why do you need my password? I don't trust you any further than I can throw you.

The Twitter API which SnapTweet depends on requires your password to post something to your stream. There is a new web standard specification called OAuth, which should make storing your password unnecessary. We intend to support it when it becomes available for the Twitter API.

  3. Why did you build SnapTweet? Aren't there other services that do the same thing?

Because we needed it. There are services that do similar things, but they don't leverage Flickr and Twitter in the same way.

  4. There's a rumor going around that you love Twitter. Is it true?

It is true that we love Twitter and Flickr and we aren't ashamed to admit it.

  5. I've never used Flickr's email upload feature. How does it work?

It's really simple. You can find your special Flickr upload email address here. You should add this address to your phone's address book. The title of the email is the title of the photo, the body of the email is the photo description. You can set tags with "tags:tag1,tag2,tag3". More information on the Flickr email format can be found here.

  6. How do I let SnapTweet know I'd like to post a photo?

There are two ways. Send a direct message ( D SNAPTWEET yourmessagehere ) to Twitter (via SMS, the web, or your client of choice). D is just short for Direct Message. If you don't include a message, the Flickr photo title will be used. You can also send a direct message directly (no "D" required) on the Twitter web site.

We also offer an auto-post feature (more on that below), which does not require the direct message step.

  7. When I post a picture to Flickr, how long should I wait before messaging SnapTweet?

Typically, Flickr has your photo locked and loaded within a minute or two.

  8. After I message SnapTweet, how long until it shows up in my Twitter stream?

Within about 5 minutes. Any longer than that and there's probably something amiss.

  9. I'd like you to auto-post my Flickr pictures to Twitter. Can you do it?

We can. Whenever you upload a picture to Flickr (via email or otherwise), you have the option of tagging the photo. SnapTweet allows you to set up a special tag in your SnapTweet profile which tells SnapTweet that you would like for that photo to auto-post.

Now, if you are one of those people that would like every emailed Flickr image to post to your Twitter stream, you can set up a default tag in Flickr which matches your Snaptweet auto-post tag and then you don't need any tags in the email for SnapTweet to post it for you!

  10. I'd like to use this auto-posting feature. How do I set it up?

Sign-in to SnapTweet and enter a tag into the Flickr Auto-Post field. It can be anything you want. Perhaps something like snaptweet would work. A Flickr image will only be auto-posted once. A side effect of this is that a direct message SnapTweet of a photo will prevent an auto-post from occurring, even if it would have otherwise been sent.

Roughly every 10 minutes, your last 10 photos will be examined to see if any of them are tagged with your Auto-Post tag. This means that you can also Tweet one of your existing Flickr photos if you tag it properly, so long as it's in your latest 10.

  11. If I am using auto-posting mode, how long until it shows up in my Twitter stream?

Within 10 minutes, probably sooner. Any longer than that and there's probably something amiss.

  12. I'd like to take a break from Flickr auto-posting. Will you let me?

To turn it off after you've been using it, just empty out your Auto-Post Tag in your SnapTweet profile and save it.

  13. With auto-posting turned on, can I still customize the SnapTweet message when it goes out?

Yes, if you are that geeky, you can. SnapTweet uses Flickr machine tags to substitute a different title for your tweet. Note: The quotes are critical for success! Tag it like this:

    	    "snaptweet:title=custom title goes here"

  14. I replaced my Flickr photo and now it says "Your photo is not available" on SnapTweet. What to do?

Don't fret. Maybe even go grab a beverage. SnapTweet fixes "replaced" Flickr photo links each day.
